Freight Data Portal for the San Diego Region

San Diego County hosts several freight transportation gateways. It is home to California’s largest land Port of Entry for cargo in Otay Mesa; the two maritime terminals operated by the unified port of San Diego, which is designated as a militarily strategic port; freight rail service from the Burlington Northern Santa Fe Class I railroad as well as a short line railroad connecting the downtown rail yard to the Mexican border; an airport with international cargo services. All of these freight gateways are served by an excellent Interstate and State highway and connector network.

The performance of this extraordinary network helps promote and support a thriving economy. SANDAG Freight Viewer is a resource for exploring and tracking the characteristics of this regional freight network.

Freight Planning at SANDAG

SANDAG Freight Viewer is the product of SANDAG’s continuing, comprehensive freight planning program. This program enables public stakeholders as well as carriers and shippers to participate in the metropolitan planning process and identifies freight transportation assets and trends for the San Diego Region.

SANDAG Freight Viewer represents a true public-private partnership made possible by the members and friends of SANDAG’s Freight Stakeholder Working Group (FSWG). The FSWG has provided active input and guidance in designing and preparing the Freight Viewer.

To learn more about the SANDAG’s freight planning activities and freight advisory committee, please visit the freight page of the SANDAG website.

SANDAG Freight Viewer represents a highly collaborative undertaking made possible by the members and friends of the FSWG and is modeled on the nationally recognized Delaware Valley Regional Planning Commission’s PhillyFreightFinder.

The contents and information contained in this application will be updated on a regular basis as new information is available. However, at any one point in time, some data may not reflect the most current conditions. At the present time, this mapping tool only contains infrastructure and facilities within the official SANDAG region.

The format and information on this map may be updated or changed at any time. This map does not expand the liability of SANDAG, state, local, and other agencies beyond existing law.

Open Freight App

The SANDAG Freight Viewer is based on the PhillyFreightFinder, an open source web mapping application developed by the Delaware Valley Regional Planning Commission (DVRPC). Both SANDAG and DVRPC hope that county planning agencies, metropolitan planning organizations and state departments of transportation, and economic development agencies can leverage this “Open Fright App” framework to further their efforts in making freight transportation data public. By utilizing the Open Freight App framework, rather than building from scratch, planning agencies can focus their time and resources on the development of data sets that can serve to improve the access to information on freight facilities and their role in economic development and transportation across the country. Open Freight App would serve as a self-hosted solution to offer these datasets to other planners, economic developers, public officials, decision-makers and the general public.
